Social Media vs Your Website: Who Owns What

You don’t own your Instagram page

This trips up a lot of business owners. You built a following, you posted consistently, you’ve got real engagement. And Meta could shut your account down tomorrow with no explanation and no appeal, because it’s their platform, not yours. Your website is yours. Your email list is yours. Everything on social media is rented.

Here’s the thing

Social media is a great distribution channel, genuinely. But it’s not a foundation. A business that depends entirely on Instagram for leads is one algorithm change away from starting over. A business that uses Instagram to drive people to a website it owns and an email list it controls has a foundation that survives any platform shift.

What to actually build on

Your website, your Google Business Profile, your email list. These are assets you own and control. Social media feeds into them, it doesn’t replace them.

The question to ask yourself

If your main social account disappeared tonight, could your business still generate leads tomorrow morning? If the answer is no, the priority isn’t more posts, it’s building the thing underneath.
