Road sign pointing in two different directions representing redirects

Small technical issues, real consequences

Redirect chains, mismatched HTTP and HTTPS versions, and broken redirects all quietly confuse search engines about which version of a page is the real one, splitting your ranking signal.

The common mistakes

A page that redirects to another page that redirects again, a chain instead of a direct path. Both HTTP and HTTPS versions of the site technically live and accessible, confusing which one is canonical. Old redirects left in place long after they’re needed.

Keep it clean

Every redirect should go directly to its final destination, not through two or three hops. Make sure your site forces HTTPS and there’s only one accessible version of every page.

Check it periodically

A free crawl tool can flag redirect chains and mixed HTTP or HTTPS issues in minutes. Worth running after any major site change.
